Development

The habits that get people promoted are visible long before the role exists.
Leadership in a sales and marketing organization rarely begins with a promotion. It begins when someone consistently takes responsibility for outcomes slightly outside their own numbers — training a newer teammate, cleaning up a territory handoff, flagging a problem early rather than quietly absorbing it.
The most reliable signal is teaching. People who can explain why a conversation worked, rather than only repeat it, are the people who can build a team later. If you want to develop faster, volunteer to debrief someone else's day before you polish your own pitch.
The second signal is calibration: knowing the difference between a bad week and a broken approach. That takes tracking your own results honestly enough to see the pattern, then changing one variable at a time.
None of this requires permission. It requires deciding that the standard you hold applies whether or not anyone is watching that afternoon — which is, in the end, what a title only formalizes.
